The Tibetan Plateau’s Far-Reaching Impacts on Arctic and Antarctic Climate: Seasonality and Pathways

چکیده
Abstract As the highest and most extensive plateau in world, Tibetan Plateau (TP) has remarkable effects on global climate. Through coupled model sensitivity experiments with without TP, we show that TP can affect Arctic directly via orography-forced stationary waves, influence Antarctic indirectly waves forced by sea surface temperature (SST) Indian Ocean. These far-reaching impacts occur mainly wintertime. The fast atmospheric processes play an important role; particularly, midlatitude westerly flow, which is stronger closer to equator winter, provides a favorable condition for eastward poleward energy propagation of waves. In Northern Hemisphere, removing causes wave train traveling from Asian continent North America–Atlantic Ocean region, resulting intensified westerlies thus enhancement stratospheric polar vortex cooling. pathways are northeastward upper level due background westerlies, while they then lower level, modulated winter monsoon. To south, perturbation anomalous cross-equatorial leading SST dipole pattern austral winter; this generates propagating southeastward tropical Antarctic, Rossby circulating around Antarctic. Our study identifies seasonality affecting regions, may help understand role future climate changes regions.

Arctic marine mammals and climate change: impacts and resilience.
Evolutionary selection has refined the life histories of seven species (three cetacean [narwhal, beluga, and bowhead whales], three pinniped [walrus, ringed, and bearded seals], and the polar bear) to spatial and temporal domains influenced by the seasonal extremes and variability of sea ice, temperature, and day length that define the Arctic. Recent changes in Arctic climate may challenge the ...

On the Seasonality of Arctic Haze
Arctic haze has a distinct seasonality with peak concentrations in winter but pristine conditions in summer. It is demonstrated that the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) atmospheric general circulation model AM3 can reproduce the observed seasonality of Arctic black carbon (BC), an important component of Arctic haze. We use the model to study how large-scale circulation and removal ...
متن کاملEmissions pathways, climate change, and impacts on California.
The magnitude of future climate change depends substantially on the greenhouse gas emission pathways we choose. Here we explore the implications of the highest and lowest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emissions pathways for climate change and associated impacts in California. Based on climate projections from two state-of-the-art climate models with low and medium sensitivity (Paral...
